Curlin Leads 2008 Breeders’ Cup Pre-Entries

A record 180 race horses were pre-entered on Thursday for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships led by 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin.
The 2008 Breeders’ Cup, to be held on October 24-25 at Santa Anita Park, consists of 14 Breeders’ Cup races held over 2 days, totaling $25.5 million in purses.
The 4-year-old Curlin will attempt to win the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic for a second straight year.
Among those expected to challenge Curlin this year in the Breeders’ Cup Classic are Casino Drive from Japan, Duke of Marmalade and Henrythenavigator from Ireland, and Raven’s Pass from Great Britain.
In addition to Curlin, the Breeders’ Cup 2008 event also features a record 7 defending or former Breeders’ Cup winners:
- Midnight Lute (2007 Breeders’ Cup Sprint)
- Kip Deville (2007 Breeders’ Cup Mile)
- Indian Blessing (2007 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies)
- Ginger Punch (2007 Breeders’ Cup Distaff, renamed to the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic)
- Better Talk Now (2004 Breeders’ Cup Turf)
- Red Rocks (2006 Breeders’ Cup Turf)
A total of 35 race horses from overseas have been pre-entered for the Breeders’ Cup 2008.
