Race Horse Curlin, Stephen Foster Handicap WinnerThe 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin, making his United States debut as a 4-year-old, cruised to an easy 4 1/4-length victory in the $1-million Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) for 3-year-0lds and up at Churchill Downs June 14, Saturday.

With jockey Robby Albarado aboard, Curlin took the lead after the second turn and was not challenged from there. He covered the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:49.68 and paid $2.80, $2.20 and $2.10. Einstein, under jockey Julien Leparoux, was second and returned $3.80 and $3.20. Third place finisher, Barcola with jockey Jesus Castanon paid $6 to show.

“He’s so manageable now,” Curlin’s regular rider Robby Albarado said. “He made the lead turning for home, as he’s accustomed to, and went on and proved he’s the best horse in the world.”

It was the second-largest margin of victory in the history of the race, behind only Street Cry’s 6 1/2-length romp in 2002.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Curlin is unbeaten in 3 starts in 2008. Prior to his Stephen Foster Handicap win, Curlin won the Dubai World Cup (UAE-1), last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), Preakness Stakes (G1), as well as the Arkansas Derby (G2).

It was Curlin’s first race at Churchill Downs since his third-place finish last year in the 2007 Kentucky Derby. Curlin now has 9 wins in 12 career starts and career earnings of $9,396,800.

“What a special horse he is,” horse trainer Steve Asmussen said. “You know, you are very fortunate to be involved with this sport to begin with, let alone to have an animal as special as he is.”
