Curlin Works At Saratoga
Posted on Monday, August 4th, 2008
2007 Horse of the Year Curlin worked five furlongs in 1:02.72 and is “in a beautiful rhythm,” trainer Steve Asmussen, said Monday, the day before his next horse race is scheduled to be announced.
Majority owner Jess Jackson, who was present for the workout at Saratoga’s Oklahoma training track, will announce when and where Curlin will race next on Tuesday.
The 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, Curlin, could go in the $500,000 Woodward (G1) on August 30 at Saratoga Race Course, a race also mentioned as a possible next choice for Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown, who won the Haskell Invitational on Sunday at Monmouth Park, his first start since finishing last in the June 7 Belmont Stakes.
“We’re going to sit down, take all the information, and make a decision,” race horse trainer Steve Asmussen said. “I’m just excited to see him run.”
Curlin has not run since finishing second in the Man o’ War Handicap last July 12 at Belmont Park, his first start on a turf course. If his handlers decide to stay on the turf, the $500,000 Sword Dancer Invitational on August 16 at Saratoga is a possibility. Curlin was among 14 horses invited to the 1 1/2-mile Sword Dancer.
The 4-year-old Curlin has dominated on dirt, winning 9 times in 12 starts.
“He’s in a beautiful rhythm, he’s very comfortable,” race horse trainer Steve Asmussen said. “He’s very loose. It amazes me how he jogs off afterward. For me, it’s like Christmas morning–I get giddy when I see him.”
