2008 Belmont Stakes Winner Da' Tara with Jockey Alan GarciaDa’ Tara, ridden by jockey Alan Garcia, wins the $1 million Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 7, at Belmont Park and foiled Big Brown’s attempt at becoming the 12th Triple Crown winner.

Trained by Nick Zito for Robert LaPenta, Da’ Tara covered 1 1/2 miles in 2:29.65 and paid $79, $28 and $14.80. Five lengths behind is Denis of Cork with jockey Robby Albarado aboard returned $5.40 and $4.10. Anak Nakal, under jockey Julien Leparoux, and Ready’s Echo, under jockey John Velazquez, dead-heated for third and showed $7.60 and $6.20 respectively.

The 2008 Belmont Stakes is Da’ Tara’s second win after breaking his maiden in his 3rd start going a mile and an eighth over a sloppy track at Gulfstream Park on January 5.

Big Brown’s disappointing performance followed convincing victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. He failed on the same track where 10 horses had been beaten over the last three decades. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Affirmed in 1978.

“I had no horse,” said Big Brown’s jockey, Kent Desormeaux.

All week long, Big Brown’s trainer, Richard Dutrow, Jr. said the horse’s victory was “a foregone conclusion.” He turned out be wrong.

I think one problem was that Big Brown wanted to run his way and Kent didn’t let him. Kent wanted to rate him and then ask him to do what he did in the Preakness. Didn’t work mainly because BB had the rail post and dirt in his face from the first few seconds. BB was not in a good mood – we saw that in the morning in the quarantine stall. Then he ran into the maiden right out of the gate. Then he was boxed in at the rail – tight. He may have gotten kicked in there. Having had no usual morning blow-out, BB was way too keen. He was going to run it his way or no way. He was a tired horse – the ONLY one in the field who has run all three TC races. He had diarrhea going up to the gate. Kent and BB seemed to be fighting each other, and that meant BB just finally gave up. That said, Kent did save his life by easing him up. I think BB was close to collapse at that point.

Not being a horse, is it possible that people underestimate how hoof problems feel for the horse? It may seem to be a fixable problem, but who really knows? I get cracks by my nails in the winter. They hurt, and I don’t have to run a mile and a half on my finger tips.

I’m no expert, but in the near past I got interested in race horses and read a great deal. I think that a good argument can be made that modern race horses just aren’t as tough as the Old School. Perhaps because of inbreeding. Perhaps because they’re coddled too much. Horses like Seabiscuit and Citation were just plain TOUGH. I mean, BB has only raced 6 times in his entire life. Maybe BB is just a Prima Donna. Maybe he’s just a punk. Frankly, I’m more impressed with Da’Tara. Any horse that can lead wire-to-wire at 1.5 miles shows me something. Is Big Brown a Little Yellow?

I think big brown was not given his steroids shots and should have been told before the race was on. when any animal is use to that and suddenly with out it showed a race fan…

I think that there was a conspiracy all along, and that was to stop BB in the very begining. I observed closely how BB was boxed in after leaving the gate. The other jocks seemed to deliberately box him in. I think that BB became a little mixed up being in the position that he was in. I felt so sad for him. This is my first time ever watching the horse races. I bid BB blessings. If there was some hanky panky involved, rest asure that what ever you measure out will be measured back to you!. The same thing that makes you Ha Ha will make you Boo Hoo!

There was nothing wrong with Big Brown. They threw the race plain and simple. There was nearly 6 million bet on him at the track ALONE, let alone world wide. The owners made a helluva lot more money throwing it than they would have winning. The jockey pulled him up and made sure he was dead last for a reason, one that comes with a lot of zero’s at the end of it.
