Denis of Cork Still Unbeaten After Southwest Stakes Win at Oaklawn Park
Posted on Monday, February 18th, 2008
The only unbeaten horse in the field of 11 3-year-olds, Denis of Cork won the $250,000 Southwest Stakes (gr. III) by 2 1/4 lengths Monday afternoon at Oaklawn Park.
The one-mile Southwest Stakes serves as the first stop of the Triple Crown trail in Oaklawn Park leading to the 2008 Kentucky Derby.
A bay son of Harlan’s Holiday, trained by David Caroll for owners Mrs. and Mrs. William Warren Jr., Denis of Cork stretched his unbeaten record to 3-for-3. Denis of Cork covered 1 mile in 1:37 4/5 over a fast track, and paid $11.60, $5.40 and $3.60 as the third choice.
Jockey Robby Albarado, the regular rider of 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin, picked up the mount on Denis of Cork when Calvin Borel, who had the choice of mounts, chose to ride Turf War in the Southwest Stakes. Turf War was never prominent, and finished ninth as the 2-1 favorite. Robby Albarado and Calvin Borel, lifelong friends from Cajun country, both are two-time Oaklawn champions.
Sierra Sunset held well for second returning $9.60 and $6.40. Finishing third 3 1/4 lengths behind are dead-heaters Sacred Journey ($4.20) and Liberty Bull ($3.80), the winner of the Smarty Jones Stakes a month back at Oaklawn Park.
Denis of Cork, named for a priest from County Cork, a friend of the Warrens, also was the only one of the 11 Southwest starters to be included in the body of pool one of Churchill Downs‘ Kentucky Derby future book.
Horse trainer David Carroll said he plans to van Denis of Cork back to Fair Grounds, then bring him back to Oaklawn for the $300,000 Rebel on March 15.
