Edgar Prado Reaches 6,000 Wins

Forty-year-old jockey from Peru, Edgar Prado, reached 6,000 career wins when he rode Sumphin, 4-year-old bay gelding trained by Tom Albertrani, to a 2 1/4 length maiden victory at Gulfstream Park Sunday, February 10.

Edgar Prado is the 16th jockey in North America to achieve 6,000 victories in his career. He also achieved win number 5,000 at Gulfstream Park in 2004 Swale Stakes aboard Win Dot Comma. Edgar Prado is also 7th on the all-time money list with his mounts earning nearly $202 million.

Edgar Prado, who has two riding titles at Gulfstream Park and has captured three Breeders’ Cup victories: the 2005 Juvenile Fillies with Folklore and Sprint with Silver Train, and the 2006 Distaff with Round Pond. He also won Florida Derbys with Harlan’s Holiday (2002) and Scat Daddy (2007).

He gained national success in 2002 when he rode 70-1 longshot Sarava to a Belmont Stakes score thwarting War Emblem from achieving the Triple Crown victory. Two years later, he stopped Smarty JonesTriple Crown bid when he guided Birdstone to a Belmont Stakes upset.

In 2006 came Edgar Prado’s biggest moment when he rode Barbaro to a 6 1/2 length victory in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Later that year, he earned an Eclipse Award as the nation’s champion jockey.

Edgar Prado broke his ankle last September and missed the major fall races.
