Posted on Monday, August 11th, 2008
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP)–Ferocious Fires, entered to run only if the race was moved from the turf course to the main track, took the lead with a furlong to go and won the $84,050 Troy Stakes run in mud Monday at Saratoga Race Course, home of the 2008 Travers Stakes.
Jockey Cornelio Velasquez rode the 5-year-old, Anthony Dutrow-trained Ferocious Fires, who won the John Morrissey Stakes at Saratoga July 31 and is the first two-time winner at the meeting. Ferocious Fires finished 1 3/4 lengths in front of Rallying Cry and ran 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.32.
Ferocious Fires, the 4-5 favorite after the change of surface resulted in four scratches, paid $3.80, $2.30 and $2.10. Ferocious Fires earned $51,390 for owner Sanford Goldfarb and partners.
Rallying Cry, ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux, returned $2.80 and $2.40. Hollywood Left, under jockey Ramon Dominguez, paid $3.40 to show.
Hellvelyn finished 4th in Saratoga’s Troy Stakes followed by Jazzy, Perfect Casting and Salute the Count.
