Florida Derby Winner Quality Road Works at Belmont Park For The Kentucky Derby 2009
Posted on Friday, April 17th, 2009
Race horse trainer Jimmy Jerkens said all systems are “go” for one of the Kentucky Derby starters, Quality Road, who Friday morning breezed 3/4 of a mile on Belmont Park‘s fast training track in 1:12.03.
Daily Racing Form clockers caught the strapping bay son of Elusive Quality, Quality Road, and exercise rider Juan Moreno galloping out in 1:25.55.
Quality Road, winner of the Florida Derby and the Fountain of Youth, who is showing no apparent ill effects from a slight quarter crack in his right hind foot, have one more work before departing for Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby 2009, on April 28, said race horse trainer Jimmy Jerkens.
“He went good, a little faster than I intended,” Jimmy Jerkens said of Quality Road, who last week went five furlongs in 1:02.19 after having had a patch placed on the crack. “His foot looked like it’s all right, too. Usually when you get this far, it’s OK.”
A quarter crack is a crack that appears in the wall of the hoof, often starting at the coronet band, where the hoof meets the hair, and growing down. It can also start in the wall and move upward. The quarter crack is being treated by noted hoof specialist Ian McKinlay, who last year worked with Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown and who also worked on 1997 Belmont Stakes winner Touch Gold.
Friday’s work was the second since Quality Road won the 9-furlong Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on March 28 in a track-record time of 1:47.72. Jerkens said he would send Quality Road out again next Saturday or Sunday.
“The weather will have a lot to do with it,” race horse trainer Jimmy Jerkens said.
Owned and bred by Edward P. Evans, Quality Road made a winning debut at Aqueduct in late November, then finished second to Theregoesjojo when making his 2009 bow in a seven-furlong allowance at Gulfstream on January 10. Quality Road next won the nine-furlong Fountain of Youth and with his Florida Derby victory extended his record to 3-1-0 from four starts with earnings of $632,830.
