Former Owners Set Up Ashado College Scholarship

Posted on Thursday, December 8th, 2005

The former owners of Ashado, 2004 Breeders’ Cup Distaff champion and Horse of the Year, has established a four-year-scholarship in the beloved mare’s name for a female student studying equine-related subject.

The scholarship will be administered by The Race For Education.

Ashado, by Saint Ballado out of Goulash, was bought for a record $9 million at the Keeneland November breedeing stock sale last month. She won 12 of her 21 starts, including seven grade I races. Her earnings of nearly $4 million place her second on the all-time earnings list for female racehorses.

The Ashado Scholarship will have the same eligibility requirements as The Race For Education’s Thoroughbred Scholarship, in that the student must be majoring in an equine-related subject, including veterinary medicine.

The recipient will be chosen from female Thoroughbred scholarship applicants. Completed applications are due February 28, 2006. The Ashado scholarship recipient will be introduced on Kentucky Oaks day at Churchill Downs.

Applications can be found at racingscholarships.com.
