Gayego Will Run In The 2008 Preakness Stakes 133
Posted on Tuesday, May 13th, 2008
Horse trainer Paulo Lobo reported Tuesday that Gayego is a “go” for Saturday’s Preakness Stakes 133.
The son of Gilded Time, Gayego, who galloped 1 1/4 miles at Hollywood Park Tuesday morning, is scheduled to arrive at Pimlico Race Course Wednesday afternoon following a cross-country flight that he will share with Preakness hopeful Yankee Bravo.
“He’s an extremely good shipper,” said horse trainer Paulo Lobo, whose colt shipped to Oaklawn Park in April for a victory in the Arkansas Derby and shipped again for a start in the Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs.
Gayego finished a disappointing 17th in the Kentucky Derby as the sixth horse betting choice in a field of 20, compromised by a sluggish start and early crowding. Paulo Lobo reported that the Kentucky-bred colt didn’t overexert himself in the Run for the Roses.
“He came back very well,” he said. “He’s been eating everything. He’s feeling happy.”
Before Gayego joined the fray, it appeared this would be the first time in 60 years the Kentucky Derby winner didn’t face a single Derby rival in the Preakness.
Jockey Mike Smith, who has ridden Gayego in each of his six lifetime starts, has the return mount for the Preakness. Smith rode 1993 Preakness winner Prairie Bayou to victory.
Paulo Lobo has not started a horse at Pimlico.
Other confirmed Preakness entries taking on Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown include Behindatthebar (1st, Coolmore Lexington), Giant Moon (4th, Gotham), Hey Byrn (1st, Holy Bull), Icabad Crane (1st, Federico Tesio), Kentucky Bear (3rd, Blue Grass), Macho Again (1st, Derby Trial), Racecar Rhapsody (4th, Coolmore Lexington), Riley Tucker (3rd, Coolmore Lexington), Stevil (4th, Blue Grass), Tres Borrachos (3rd, Arkansas Derby) and Yankee Bravo (4th, Santa Anita Derby).
The post position draw for the Preakness is Wednesday, May 14 at 5 p.m. at the ESPN Zone in downtown Baltimore. The event will be televised live on ESPN 2.
The 133rd running of the Preakness on May 17 will be televised by NBC. Preakness post time is 6:15 p.m.
