Georgie Boy Off The Santa Anita Derby And Kentucky Derby Trail
Posted on Monday, March 31st, 2008
Georgie Boy, one of the leading 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders, is off the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) and the 2008 Kentucky Derby trail due to a pulled muscle in his back.
Horse trainer Kathy Walsh said Monday, “It’s high on his back end and we don’t know how long it will take (to heal), but we’re not going to take a chance,” Walsh said. “The vet examined him and was very happy with what he saw other than the pulled muscle. He will not require surgery.”
Kathy Walsh said she wouldn’t want to run Georgie Boy in the Kentucky Derby without a prep race, so he may not return to racing until the Pacific Classic in August.
Unbeaten as a 3-year-old, Georgie Boy and El Gato Malo were expected to be the favorites for Santa Anita Park’s $750,000 Santa Anita Derby at 1 1/8 miles on Saturday, April 5. Georgie Boy has a 4-2-1 record with earnings of $496,806 in seven starts.
