Gulfstream Not Taking In Maryland Horses

Posted on Monday, January 23rd, 2006

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Gulfstream Park and Palm Meadows Training Center will not accept Maryland horses in an effort to protect against the spread of the equine herpes virus.

They will not accept horses that have raced or been stabled in Maryland since Jan. 1, track management said Saturday.

Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore is under quarantine because of an outbreak of the virus at the track. Eleven horses at Pimlico have shown signs of the virus this year, and two were euthanized.

Equine herpesvirus-1, also known as "rhino," causes upper respiratory infection and can cause neurological disease.

"Gulfstream Park management will monitor this situation and adjust policy as necessary," track officials said.
