Gulfstream Park’s Scholarship Program For Florida Students
Posted on Wednesday, February 6th, 2008
Gulfstream Park has established the Florida Resident Scholarship, a $40,000 program benefiting a college student who is also a Florida resident pursuing an equine-related degree. This includes, but is not limited to, Equine Science, Equine Business Management, Farrier School, and equine-related agriculture programs.
Beginning in 2008, Gulfstream Park will provide the scholarship winner with $10,000 each year over a four-year term.
The selection process involves the submission of an application, which includes an essay outlining the students’ ambitions in the horse industry, due February 28. Eligible applicants will then be narrowed down during a review held between March and April. Scholarship recipients will be announced in May.
These recipients will be treated to a 3-day equine seminar in Lexington, Kentucky, to be hosted by Georgetown College. Their days will be spent touring local breeding farms and an equine rehabilitation farm, observing a surgery at an equine hospital and attending the Fasig-Tipton July sale to learn buyers’ selection process and how a sales catalog is assembled. The seminar will culminate with a picnic hosted by donors and scholarship alumni, which will serve as the official scholarship award ceremony.
Recipients must maintain a 2.85 grade-point average and provide a letter to the board after each semester summarizing their progress and any challenges that they may face.
The scholarship program will be administered by the Race For Education (RFE).
Carl Nafzger, who is on the RFE Board of Directors, praised Gulfstream Park’s contribution, saying it is a “positive step in the right direction for all of racing. [The contribution from this scholarship] will live on for a long time.
“Frank Stronach is always thinking of the future of racing and the future of racing is our youth.”
Gulfstream Park President and General Manager Bill Murphy, concurs.
“Magna Entertainment Corp. and Gulfstream Park recognize that the survival and success of this great sport rests with this country’s youth. Thoroughbred racing and Gulfstream Park have a long tradition of involvement with scholarship programs and we are pleasured to make this donation.”
