Hall of Famer Jerry Bailey To Retire
Posted on Wednesday, January 18th, 2006
Jockey Jerry Bailey, second on all-time North Americans earnings list for riders, will retire at the end of the month, according to his agent Ron Anderson.
The 48-year-old hall of famer is expected to announce his decision during a teleconference on Wednesday that starts at noon EST. Anderson said Bailey plans to retire after the Sunshine Millions on January 28 at Santa Anita Park and Gulfstream Park.
Bailey is a finalist for the Eclipse Award for outstanding jockey of 2005 and has hinted that he thought about retiring at the end of last year. His North American earnings of $295,865,139 is ranked second all-time to the $297,912,019 Pat Day earned before retiring in August.
He has won six Triple Crown races: the Kentucky Derby (G1) in 1993 aboard Sea Hero and in ‘96 on Grindstone; the 2000 Preakness Stakes (G1) with Red Bullet; the ‘91 Preakness and Belmont Stakes (G1) with Hansel; and the 2003 Belmont with Empire Maker.
He earned his record fifth win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) in 2005 while concluding that season with 169 wins in 654 starts and earnings of $18,297,384.
