Harlem Rocker Skips Preakness Stakes 2008; Gayego May Run In Pimlico
Posted on Monday, May 12th, 2008
Todd Petcher-trainee Harlem Rocker will skip the Preakness Stakes and is headed for the $1 million Queen’s Plate Stakes on June 22 at Woodbine.
Pletcher still has a Preakness runner in Lexington Stakes winner Behindatthebar who will be ridden by jockey David Flores, and will be shipped to Pimlico from Belmont Park, home of the 2008 Belmont Stakes, in New York on Saturday morning.
While Arkansas Derby winner and 17th place finisher in the Kentucky Derby Gayego is under consideration to run in the 2008 Preakness Stakes.
“I’m going to decide (Tuesday). We are going to have a meeting,” Gayego’s trainer Paulo Lobo said from Southern California. “I’m going to track him in the morning, then we’ll make a decision.”
In the Kentucky Derby, Gayego had to be steadied in traffic after getting off to a sluggish start. Lobo said his colt never got into the race after his early troubles.
“That’s the reason we are thinking about (the Preakness),” he said. “He’s very happy right now and he came back very sound.”
If Gayego doesn’t run, it would be the first time in 60 years the Kentucky Derby winner didn’t face a single Kentucky Derby rival in the Preakness.
Other confirmed Preakness entries taking on Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown include Giant Moon (4th, Gotham), Hey Byrn (1st, Holy Bull), Icabad Crane (1st, Federico Tesio), Kentucky Bear (3rd, Blue Grass), Macho Again (1st, Derby Trial), Racecar Rhapsody (4th, Coolmore Lexington), Riley Tucker (3rd, Coolmore Lexington), Stevil (4th, Blue Grass), Tres Borrachos (3rd, Arkansas Derby) and Yankee Bravo (4th, Santa Anita Derby).

With the distinct possibility that none of the losers from the Derby will run Saturday, the question arises, what has happened to the old-time owners who were not the wusses of Today who want guaranteed winners and cannot under any conditions be considered Sportsmen. What if Point Given or Damascus or Native Dancers owners had just up and quit like these jokers. I’ll tell you what, we would have a few more unworthy Triple Crown winners like we are probably going to have this year. Big Brown is not that good but if all of his real competition runs and hides, he is going wear that Crown, God protect us from the future Green Monkeys he’s going to sire. True Sportsman, where are you when we need you.“““““““““““`with apologies to those owners that may think they are doing the best thing for Racing CR
