Holy Bull Stakes Entries at Gulfstream Park January 31

John Oxley’s Beethoven makes his 3-year-old debut while Lansdon Robbins III and Sam Delaney’s Danger to Society makes his stakes debut in Gulfstream Park‘s $150,000 Holy Bull Stakes (G3) at 1 1/8 miles on Saturday, January 30.
The Holy Bull Stakes is one of the prep races for the 2009 Kentucky Derby. Holy Bull entries with jockeys and weight in post position order:

- Rockland under jockey Jose Lezcano, 114 lbs.

- Nowhere to Hide under jockey Alan Garcia, 114 lbs.
- West Side Bernie under jockey Elvis Trujillo, 122 lbs.
- Beethoven under jockey Calvin Borel, 122 lbs.
Jockey Calvin Borel rode Beethoven to win the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs last November for race horse trainer John Ward and he will be back in town for the mount Saturday, although they will have to overcome the far outside post 11.

. The $300,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling purchase by Harlan’s Holiday won his debut at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, in mid-November and came back with an impressive 3 1/2 lengths allowance score going 1 1/8 miles over the Gulfstream track on January 8 in his only other start.
Other contenders with solid credentials include Lori and George Hall’s West Side Bernie, Emory Hamilton’s Rockland and My Meadowview Farm’s Nowhere to Hide.
West Side Bernie is a Bernstein colt trained by Kelly Breen and makes his first start since a strong runner-up effort in the Delta Jackpot (G3) at Delta Downs in Louisiana on December 5. The $50,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase had won the Kentucky Cup Juvenile (G3) at Turfway Park and finished sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Santa Anita Park in his two previous starts.
Rockland is a Kentucky homebred colt from Smarty Jones’ first crop trained by Michael Matz and makes his stakes debut. After finishing third in his career debut at Keeneland in October, Rockland broke his maiden at Meadowlands in November and won an allowance last out going 1 1/16 miles on turf at Calder Race Course last out on December 20.
Nowhere to Hide is a $250,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase trained by Nick Zito and broke his maiden last out at Calder going a mile around two turns on December 13. The son of Vindication, Nowhere to Hide, had run well in each of four previous starts, finishing second twice and third once.
The Holy Bull Stakes is race 7 of Gulfstream Park’s January 30 race card. Holy Bull post time is 4:12 pm Pacific. Included in its card is the $500,000 Donn Handicap (G1) for 4-year-olds and up also at 1 1/8 miles.
