Hong Kong Jockey In Coma After fall

Posted on Monday, June 26th, 2006

Hongkong horse racing Champion jockey Shane Dye is in a coma after a race fall on Sunday, the South China Morning Post reports.

Dye, 39, was aboard Ambitious Marju in the second race at Hong Kong’s Sha Tin race track when his mount clipped the heels of another horse and he was thrown.

He underwent an operation Sunday night at the Prince of Wales Hospital to relieve pressure from bleeding on his brain.

Dye, who was born in New Zealand but did most of his championship race riding in Australia, has been riding in Hong Kong for six years and is currently fifth on the Hong Kong ladder with 43 wins.

In Australia, he won the Melbourne Cup in 1989 on Tawriffic and the Sydney Cup in 1998 on Tie The Knot. He was the champion jockey in Sydney in 1990-91 and again in 1996-97.
