Horse Owner Allaire Du Pont Dead at 92

Posted on Monday, January 9th, 2006

Allaire C. du Pont, a thoroughbred enthusiast and owner of five-time Horse of the Year Kelso, has died on Jan. 6 at her Woodstock Farm in Chesapeake City, Md.. She was 92.

Du Pont died of natural causes at her home, her daughter-in-law, Caroline Prickett said.

Kelso, du Pont’s most famous horse, won 39 races, with 12 seconds, two thirds and career earnings of nearly $2 million. He was voted Horse of the Year five years in a row (1960-64), a record that still stands. Du Pont’s many passions included aviation, fox hunting, tennis and preservation of open spaces.

After Kelso was retired, du Pont rode him three days a week on fox hunts. She told The (Wilmington) News Journal in 2003 that her daughter, Lana, who competed in equestrian at the Olympics, was concerned about that.

"I remember my daughter said, ‘Mom, you can’t do that. He will run away with you,"’ she said. "I replied, ‘He was a perfect gentleman."’

Du Pont drew other Thoroughbred operations to Cecil County, and helped transform the rural county in Maryland’s northeast corner into a racing headquarters. She was among the first to commit her land to Maryland’s Agricultural Land Preservation Program.

Du Pont’s late husband, Richard C. du Pont Sr., was a pioneer in aviation and among the first inducted into the Delaware Aviation Hall of Fame.

Du Pont is survived by daughter Lana Wright, daughter-in-law, Caroline Prickett, and by grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In accord with her wishes, no service is planned.
