Horse Racing, Casinos In New Jersey Re-Opens

Posted on Friday, July 7th, 2006

monmouth_park_racingHorseracing and simulcasting in New Jersey are expected to resume on Friday or Saturday after the state’s governor and lawmakers reached a deal Thursday on a new budget, ending nearly a week of crisis and uncertainty in the state.

Gov. Jon S. Corzine said the government shutdown that halted Atlantic City casino operations, closed racetracks and threw more than 80,000 people out of work would end in the next 24 to 36 hours. Budget bills first must pass both the Senate and Assembly, he said.

According to the deal state sales tax will increase rom 6% to 7 % and use half the $1.1 billion that it will raise to help lower property taxes, which are among the highest in the nation. It allows the possibility that, in future years, the entire increase will go to property tax relief.

Live racing and simulcasting in the state, including Monmouth Park, the Meadowlands and the Atlantic City racebooks, ceased on Wednesday.

With this development, the $750,000 United Nations Stakes slated for Saturday July 8 at Monmouth Park will likely push through.

Bushwood Racing Partners’s Better Talk Now will attempt to secure his fifth Grade 1 victory against top competition when he faces six challengers including English Channel, trained by Todd Pletcher. He won the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (G1) on May 6 at Churchill Downs before finishing fourth in the Manhattan at Belmont Park.

Here’s the complete field for the 2006 United Nations Stakes (Gr. I) – Jockeys, Post Position:
