Horse Racing Results: Kodiak Kowboy Wins The Cigar Mile Handicap at Aqueduct November 28

Posted on Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Fox Hill Farm and Vinery Stables’ Kodiak Kowboy put an exclamation point on his stakes-studded horse racing career Saturday afternoon at Aqueduct Racetrack, rallying through the stretch to edge Bribon and Vineyard Haven in a rousing edition of the $300,000 Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile Handicap (G1).

SBG Global RacebookThe 4-year-old son of Posse, Kodiak Kowboy, ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, settled in fourth along the inside as Vineyard Haven, part of the favored entry with Pyro, dueled with Driven by Success through fractions of 23.69 and 46.80. With Bribon taking over midway through the stretch, Bridgmohan angled Kodiak Kowboy to the outside and he responded with a strong late kick to surge into the lead inside the sixteenth pole and win by 3/4 of a length.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Kodiak Kowboy covered a mile in 1:35.57 over a fast track.

“I was just very patient with him, and when I asked him, he responded like the professional he’s always been,” said winning jockey Shaun Bridgmohan. “He’s such a cool horse.”

The victory marked the third Grade 1 of the year for Kodiak Kowboy, who won the Carter Handicap at the Big A in April while under the care of trainer Larry Jones and the Vosburgh at Belmont Park in October for Asmussen.

With career earnings of $1,668,529 and a record of 11-4-3 from 23 starts, Kodiak Kowboy is a six-time graded stakes winner including victories at Saratoga Race Course in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special in 2007 and the Grade 2 Amsterdam in 2008, and at Belmont Park in the Grade 3 Sport Page in 2008.

Online Horse Betting“We couldn’t be happier,” said Tom Ludt, president of Vinery Stables. “Shaun rode a great race. He’s ridden him well as a 2-year-old, and as a 4-year-old. This horse has been so good for us. Now, he’s going home to be a dad.”

The third choice in the Cigar Mile Handicap field of six, Kodiak Kowboy returned $8.70 for a $2 win bet as he avenged his fifth-place finish in last year’s Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile and wrapped up his career on a high note after having missed the Breeders’ Cup Sprint following a sub-par work and an endoscopic examination that revealed mucous.

Bribon, who was bidding to become the first horse to win Belmont Park’s Grade 1 Met Mile and the Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile in a single year, finished a head in front of Vineyard Haven, who in turn was followed by Vacation, Pyro, and Driven by Success.

“He ran hard all the way to the wire, and it’s unfortunate he didn’t win,” said jockey Rajiv Maragh, aboard the runner-up. “He ran too good to lose, but there can only be one winner.”
