Incriminate Wins Century’s Envoy Feature
Posted on Monday, March 3rd, 2008
Incriminate, a large, long-striding gray colt, finally found clear sailing down Santa Anita Park’s hillside turf course Monday and captured the featured $53,600 Century’s Envoy by one length over Gweebarra while covering 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:12.44.
Purchased by Darley Stable for $1.5 million as a yearling, the Kentucky-bred son of Unbridled’s Song had demonstrated flashes of class during his first 10 races but often encountered trouble, much of it his own doing.
Monday’s allowance race was his third try over the winding downhill layout after encountering trouble the first two times, and jockey Brice Blanc was able to negotiate a trouble-free trip aboard the 3-1 second choice in a field of nine.
Hurry Home Warren checked in third, one-half length behind runner-up Gweebarra, who closed strongly on the extreme outside under Rafael Bejarano while racing for the first time since July.
Incriminate paid $8.80, $4.80 and $3.40. The prices on Gweebarra were $8.60 and $4.80 while Hurry Home Warren, ridden by Victor Espinoza, paid $7 to show. Congo King, the 2-1 favorite, became bottled up along the rail during the stretch run and finished fifth.
Trained by Eoin Harty, Incriminate gained his third career victory in 11 starts. It was worth $31,200 to bring his career total to $112,879.
“He’s going in the right direction,” Harty said afterward. “Since we put him on turf and changed his style, it’s paid off in spades. Since we got Brice on him and got him on turf, he’s turned it around.”
Joined by Blanc last October, Incriminate finished third in his first race down the hillside course, but ran into traffic in midstretch. He next scored from off the pace under Blanc in his second turf sprint at Hollywood Park. Most recently, Incriminate threw his head at the start while racing over the Santa Anita course, yet closed well to lose by only three lengths despite running seventh.
He began his career in the East, winding up fourth after leading early in two graded stakes races as a 2-year-old. Prior to his last start, Incriminate had competed in the Grade I Malibu Stakes. He finished 4 1/2 lengths behind the winner, Johnny Eves, while winding up seventh.
Santa Anita will be dark on Tuesday and Wednesday before racing resumes at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
