Jockey Garrett Gomez To Ride Pioneerof the Nile In The Kentucky Derby 2009
Posted on Sunday, April 19th, 2009
Jockey Garrett Gomez, winless in 5 Kentucky Derby starts, said Sunday that he’ll ride race horse trainer Bob Baffert’s Pioneerof the Nile in the May 2 Kentucky Derby 2009 at Churchill Downs.
Garrett Gomez chose Pioneerof the Nile over Dunkirk, citing his four-race winning streak with the colt that included a victory in the Santa Anita Derby.
The Kentucky Derby will be the first start on dirt for Pioneerof the Nile, son of 2003 Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker, is considered one of the early favorite Kentucky Derby entries.
Dunkirk finished second to Quality Road in the Florida Derby with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard on March 28 at Gulfstream Park.
