Veteran jockey Tim Doocy, who won his 5,000th career win at Oaklawn Park in the 2009 live meet, was injured in a training accident at the Arkansas race track on Monday morning.
Jockey Tim Doocy’s mount was pulling up from a 3 furlong workout when she collided with the pony being ridden by outrider Chisum Ewing, who was chasing a loose horse.
Doocy was taken to the Emergency Room at St. Joseph’s Mercy Health Center where early diagnosis indicated fractures to his ankle, knee and hand. He was being scheduled for surgery on Monday afternoon.
“The colt was galloping out strong,” noted jockey Tim Doocy following the accident, “and I just didn’t see Chisum until too late. We hit head on.”
Doocy’s mount was The ATM, a maiden two-year-old Trippi colt, owned by Shim Racing and trained by Steve Hobby. Chisum Ewing escaped injury from the accident. Both horses were euthanized on the track.
Just two weeks short of his 55th birthday, Doocy has many of his best moments at Oaklawn. He was champion rider at the Oaklawn Park race track in 1998 and 1999. His most celebrated memories of Oaklawn come when he won the 2008 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap aboard Semaphore for trainer Kelly Von Hemel and in his many wins aboard popular Oaklawn campaigner Chindi for trainer Hobby.
