Even-money favorite Mayor Marv, ridden by jockey David Flores, won the 2009 Kentucky Derby prep race, the $100,000 Turf Paradise Derby, for Valley resident Mike Pegram Saturday, February 21, at Turf Paradise.
Taking the lead from the start and tracked every step of the way by Hidden Bounty, the Bob Baffert trainee Mayor Marv pulled away from that one with a sixteenth of mile to go, to win the Turf Paradise Derby by 4 1/2 lengths.
Hidden Bounty was a clear runner-up, 5 1/4 lengths in front of Just Jebicah who finished third in the Turf Paradise Derby field of seven 3-year-old Kentucky Derby hopefuls.
“We’ll look to go next in the Sunland Derby,” said race horse owner Mike Pegram.
Sunland Park’s $800,000 Sunland Derby at 1 1/8 miles is scheduled for March 29. The Sunland Derby is also one of the 2009 Kentucky Derby prep races.
“I’m please with what I saw,” said race horse trainer Bob Baffert, who watched the simulcast at Santa Anita Park Turf Paradise . “He’s improving and getting better.”
Mayor Marv covered the Turf Paradise Derby distance of 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.23 paying $4, $2.40 and $2.10. Hidden bounty, under jockey Wilson Omar Dieguez, returned $2.60 and $2.40 while Just Jebicah with jockey Ry Eikleberry showed $6.
Mayor Marv’s namesake, former Carson City, Nevada Mayor, Marv Teixeira was on hand for the winner’s circle presentation.
Lesson in Deceit finished fourth in the Turf Paradise Derby followed by Pauper’s Prize, Albacore Bob and French Hit.
