Up-and-coming 3-year-old Kentucky Derby hopefuls are racing at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday’s $225,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) with Free Country being the 3-1 morning line favorite.
The 1 1/16-mile Sam F. Davis Stakes entries with jockeys, weight and morning line odds in post position order:
Medaglia d’Onore under jockey Daniel Centeno carries 116 lbs. with morning line odds of 20-1- General Quarters under jockey James Lopez, 116 lbs., 8-1
- Player’s List under jockey Arienne Cox, 122 lbs., 50-1
- Mitchell Park under jockey Luis Antonio Gonzalez, 116 lbs., 20-1
- Atomic Rain under jockey John Velazquez, 116 lbs., 7-2

Free Country comes into the Sam F. Davis off of an impressive victory in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park on January 8 for owner Silver Wing Stable, et al. and race horse trainer Kenneth McPeek. Jockey Kent Desormeaux has the call to ride the Kentucky-bred son of Big County.
Also part of the Sam F. Davis Stakes field is Atomic Rain, a trainee of Kelly Breen from the stable of George and Lori Hall. Atomic Rain was runner-up in the Remsen Stakes (G2) in November and was the second by a neck to Free Country in both colts’ last outing.
The Sam F. Davis Stakes is one of the prep races for the 2009 Kentucky Derby. It is run as the tenth race in Tampa Bay Downs’s February 14 card. Sam F. Davis post time is 4:47 pm. Included in its card are the $125,000 Endeavour Stakes (G3) for fillies and mares and the $75,000 Suncoast Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.
