Kentucky Derby Winning Trainer Rick Dutrow Appeals 30-Day Suspension
Posted on Wednesday, July 15th, 2009
Richard Dutrow Jr., trainer of last year’s Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown, is appealing a 30-day suspension issued by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission for violating doping rules.
Race horse trainer Rick Dutrow argues in the appeal that the commission violated his due process rights and that the suspension was “not based on substantial evidence.”
Dutrow was suspended last week after tests revealed that one of his horses, Salute the Count, had an excessive amount of Clenbuterol in his blood after finishing second in a 2008 race at Churchill Downs. The racing commission also ordered Dutrow to return the purse money won by the horse.
Dutrow filed the appeal Friday in Franklin County Circuit Court. His attorney, Frank Becker, said he is asking the court to void the commission’s order.
