Kip Deville Headlines 2008 Breeders’ Cup Mile
Posted on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008
Returning Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Kip Deville headlines a deep field of 11 for the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Mile on the turf course at Santa Anita Park.
Kip Deville has won 2 of 3 starts this year for race horse trainer Rick Dutrow. Jockey Cornelio Velasquez, who rode Kip Deville to Breeders’ Cup victory last year at Monmouth Park, has the call Saturday and will break from post position 2.
The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Mile also has lured two highly accomplished females willing to challenge the boys: Lael Stables’ 5-year-old mare Precious Kitten and Wertheimer & Frere’s 3-year-old filly Goldikova, who will break next to each other from post positions 3 and 4, respectively.
Goldikova, who will be ridden by jockey Olivier Peslier, beat male rivals going a mile in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp on September 7 for her fifth victory in 7 starts at the distance on the grass.
Precious Kitten, who will be racing against males for the first time and be ridden by jockey Rafael Bejarano, is a three-time Grade 1 winner, who never has been worse than second in six turf starts at a mile.
Females have won 5 times in the previous 24 runnings of the Breeders’ Cup Mile, headlined by Miesque’s back-to-back scores in 1987 and 1988. The most recent female Breeders’ Cup Mile winner came at Santa Anita in 2003 with the victory by Six Perfections.
