Laurel Park Isolates Barn After Filly Nin Was Found With Equine Herpesvirus

Posted on Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Online Horse BettingLaurel Park isolated a barn after a 2-year old filly Nin tested positive for equine herpesvirus.

Trained by King Leatherbury, filly Nin was sitting up and eating Thursday morning with no fever. She could not stand on Wednesday.

A hold order was placed on Barn 1 at Laurel Park race track in central Maryland. None of the 29 race horses in the barn will be permitted to train or race, pending further testing.

The Maryland Department of Agriculture took blood samples and nasal swabs from the horses stabled near Nin in the barn.

Equine herpesvirus causes upper respiratory infection and can lead to severe neurological disease. Four horses died at Pimlico Race Course, home of the Preakness Stakes, and Laurel Park during an outbreak of the virus in 2006.
