Leftover EHV-1 hold orders and isolations lifted on Pimlico and Bowie

BALTIMORE (AP) — The outbreak of equine herpesvirus at Maryland’s racetracks is over, state health officials said Wednesday.

Hold orders were lifted on Pimlico Race Course’s detention barn and an isolated barn at the Bowie Training Center after the last four horses in those barns tested negative for equine herpesvirus, State Veterinarian Guy Hohenhaus said.

"These negative tests bring this EHV-1 outbreak to official closure in Maryland as all hold orders have been lifted and there are no reported signs of the virus anywhere in the state," Hohenhaus said in a statement.

The virus, which causes upper respiratory infection and can also cause neurological disease, hit Pimlico in January as three horses from three barns at the track were euthanized.

The track was quarantined for 18 days. After more than two months of quarantine and isolation, all horses in the affected barns have tested negative.

At Laurel Park, there was a hold order on one barn for more than a month after a filly was euthanized Jan. 26. Last week, two horses that didn’t clear the testing process were moved to the Bowie Training Center until they tested negative on Wednesday, officials said.
