Mariah Plus Dominates the 117 Argentine One Thousand Guineas

Posted on Monday, September 10th, 2007

Mariah Plus cruised to an impressive front-running victory in the 117th edition of the Gran Premio Polla de Potrancas (Arg-G1) (Argentine One Thousand Guineas) on Saturday at Hipodromo Argentino de Palermo in Buenos Aires.

Under jockey Pablo Falero, the Alpha Plus filly led at every point of call en route to a dominant six-length triumph in the opening leg of the Argentine Triple Crown series.

Trained by 73-year-old Juan Carlos Etchechoury, father of three prominent trainers, Mariah Plus completed 1,600 meters (7.95 furlongs) on a track rated as fast in 1:33.81 to register her first victory at the highest level and second overall in seven career starts.

Mariah Plus entered off a runner-up finish to Mama Delia on the turf in the Gran Premio Mil Guineas - Consagracion de Potrancas (Arg-G1) on July 28 at San Isidro.

Runner-up Salt Revel, trained by one of Etchechoury’s sons, finished three lengths in front of La Plata’s Polla de Potrancas (Arg-G2) winner La Secre.

Group 1 winners Wiskola and Mama Delia, finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 11-horse field.

Owned by Luisita and Charly Cuprill’s Woodvale Farm, Mariah Plus will be pointed to the Gran Premio Seleccion (Arg-G1) in October.

The One Thousand Guineas is the first race in the Argentine Triple Crown—in addition to the Polla de Potrillos (Arg-G1) (Argentine Two Thousand Guineas) for colts—which is completed by the Jockey Club (Arg-G1) and Nacional (Arg-G1).

Mariah Plus is one of three winners from four starters out of Mary’s Luck, by Candy Stripes.
