Posted on Friday, May 29th, 2009

Eric Fein and Vic Carlson’s Musket Man, third in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, is at Monmouth Park and will start jogging on Sunday as he prepares for the $1-million Haskell Invitational (G1) on August 2.

Online Horse BettingRace horse trainer Derek Ryan said the Yonaguska colt, Musket Man, who won the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) and Illinois Derby (G2) coming into the Kentucky Derby, will jog for 3 or 4 days and start galloping on Wednesday.

Derek Ryan said he does not plan to run his charge before the Haskell. Instead, he plans to work the colt Musket Man in the afternoon between races as part of Musket Man’s preparation for the big event.

After running third behind Rachel Alexandra and Mine That Bird in the Preakness on May 16, Musket Man returned to Monmouth and then was sent to a nearby farm for a 2-week vacation. Race horse trainer Derek Ryan said the colt Musket Man returned to his barn on Wednesday.

Joining Musket Man in the Haskell Invitaional 2009 is Vinery Stables and Fox Hill Farm’s Friesan Fire.

Race horse trainer Larry Jones said that the Haskell 2009 is the main objective this summer for Friesan Fire.

“That’s the number one target, the Haskell,” said Jones, who saddled Hard Spun to a runner-up performance in the Haskell Invitational last 2007. “You’ll be seeing a lot of us at Monmouth this summer.”

A 3-year-old colt by A.P. Indy, Friesan Fire started the favorite in the Kentucky Derby, but grabbed a quarter at the break and never ran his race. In the Preakness, he again had trouble at the start and failed to fire.
