New Horse Hospital To Open Near Belmont Park
Posted on Friday, August 25th, 2006
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — A $7 million equine hospital near Belmont Park is expected to open by June 2007, giving thoroughbred owners there and at Aqueduct a nearby option when their racehorses need care.
Urgent care for multimillion-dollar racehorses was in the spotlight this year after Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro broke three bones above and below his right rear ankle at the start of the May 20 Preakness. Surgery and extensive care are credited with helping Barbaro survive the devastating injuries. He is still recovering.
Equine surgeon Dr. Patricia Hogan, who has worked on horses such as Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones and multiple winner Afleet Alex, will run the hospital. The lead veterinarian will be Dr. James Hunt, who currently oversees care of many thoroughbreds at Belmont.
The hospital will be open to all horses, but will specifically benefit thoroughbreds stabled in the metropolitan area.
The nearest comparable facility is in upstate New York at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca.
The 11,500-square foot medical center will include a surgical facility, a computerized radiography and ultrasound unit, treadmill evaluation equipment, a pharmacy, closed-circuit monitoring, and dentistry, laboratory, and emergency care.
The center was financed by the International Equine Acquisitions Holdings, Inc., an industry organization formed in 2003.
