Pennsylvania Derby Returns With $1 Million Purse
Posted on Wednesday, February 21st, 2007
(AP) — The Pennsylvania Derby will be worth $1 million when it returns to Philadelphia Park on Labor Day after a year off.
The Sept. 3 race was canceled last year to allow conversion of some facilities to a slot machine casino. In 2005, it was run for a purse of $750,000.
Track management is also seeking to boost the race from Grade II to Grade I when the next evaluation is made by the North American Graded Stakes Committee.
The Fitz Dixon Cotillion Handicap has also been moved up from its early October date to Sept. 22. The race for 3-year-old fillies can now serve as a prep for the $2 million Breeders Cup Distaff slated for Oct. 27 at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.
