Plesa Stable Triple Threat on Florida Derby Day

Posted on Friday, March 7th, 2008

Horse trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. has a leading contender for the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, March 29 with Bea Oxenberg’s Hey Byrn going into the historic Kentucky Derby preview after winning allowance races by 14 lengths and six lengths on February 10 and March 2, respectively.

Plesa will also have Halo Hollie running that afternoon in the $200,000 Bonnie Miss Stakes (G2), the nine-furlong 3-year-old filly companion event to the Florida Derby. The two-time winner at the meet will have a new owner for that start.

“She’s been sold privately since her last race to a partnership of Three Chimneys Racing and Richard Colton, Jr.,” said Plesa Friday morning. “Fortunately, I’ve been retained as trainer. She’s earned her chance (in Bonnie Miss).”

Halo Hollie is a Florida-bred daughter of Halo’s Image that finished third in her career debut at Calder in December and won races at Gulfstream on Jan. 31 at six furlongs and Feb. 24 at one mile in her next two starts for owner Elena Crim.

Eddie Plesa also sends out Padua Stable’s 5-year-old gelding Electrify in the $75,000 Forever Whirl Stakes on the Florida Derby Day program, a race recently added to the schedule for Florida-breds at 1 1/8 miles as well.

A chestnut homebred by Delaware Township, Electrify anchored Plesa’s division at Calder last year with four stakes victories and earnings of nearly $300,000 while Gottcha Gold led the Monmouth Park division with victories in the Salvator Mile Handicap (G3) and Philip H. Iselin Handicap (G3) before finishing second to Corinthian in the inaugural edition of the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on October 27.

Electrify and Gottcha Gold both had an unfortunate start to the new season, finishing eighth and ninth, respectively, in the $1 million Sunshine Millions Classic at Santa Anita on January 26.
