Preakness Winner Filly Rachel Alexandra Works at Churchill Downs; No Decision On The Belmont Stakes 2009
Posted on Monday, May 25th, 2009
The Preakness-winning filly Rachel Alexandra and Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird worked over a “sloppy” track at Churchill Downs.
Mine That Bird, under jockey Calvin Borel breezed 4 furlongs in :51. Filly Rachel Alexandra cruised a half mile in :50.20 under exercise rider Dominic Terry in her first work since winning the second jewel of the Triple Crown on May 16 at Pimlico Race Course.
Majority owner of filly Rachel Alexandra, Jess Jackson of Stonestreet Stables, said a decision on racing filly Rachel Alexandra in the Belmont Stakes 2009 on June 6 at Belmont Park would not be made until next week at the earliest. Filly Rachel Alexandra is scheduled to work then and her camp would know more after that effort.
“She is recovering nicely from the Preakness,” race horse owner Jess Jackson said. “The key thing is her attitude. She thinks can run through a brick wall. We have to pull her back because she wants to run.”
Race horse trainer Steve Asmussen said he was pleased with the work, which came under unusual conditions
. A brief, but heavy, rain shower started to pelt the track as filly Rachel Alexandra entered the far turn, about an eighth of a mile into her work.
“She looked beautiful, like Rachel does,” said race horse trainer Steve Asmussen. “The weather was not exactly cooperating this morning. We [had] a pretty good shower right in the middle of her breeze, but she handled it well, like she does everything else. She came back very relaxed and looked good.”
Ater Rachel Alexandra’s work, Jess Jackson huddled with jockey Calvin Borel, who has ridden Rachel Alexandra throughout her winning streak of 6 consecutive stakes races, and Jerry Hissam, Borel’s agent. Jackson said that jockey Robby Albarado, the rider of his two-time “Horse of the Year” Curlin, could be called on to ride Rachel Alexandra if the decision was made to run the filly in the Belmont Stakes and Borel had another Belmont Stakes riding commitment.

I DO NOT BELIEVE Jackson will change jockeys for RA in the Belmont Stakes!! Borel is the only “constant” she has since since being sold to Jackson–all of her wins have come under Borel!! What is the rationale behind such a STUPID decision? I heard Jackson say (on the way to the winner’s circle after the Preakness) that Borel OR the jockey who rode Curlin would ride her at Belmont, but I never thought for a minute that he was serious. New surroundings, new trainer, new EVERYTHING–including the jockey with whom she has a special rapport–will prove detrimental to any chance this beautiful Filly has to win the Belmont………….UNREAL! I would love to see this magnificent athlete win the Belmont; however, I hope Jackson loses. SO, I will change transfer my support to one of the colts. IF Borel is on Mine That Bird, that will be a winner……..do you think Jackson made this “IDIOT’S” decision ‘under the influence of to much of his own wine?’
