A pair of Kentucky Derby contenders trained by Steve Asmussen, Pyro and Z Humor, top the field of the $300,000 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds on Saturday, February 9.
The Risen Star Stakes is an early prep race leading to the 2008 Kentucky Derby, first of the Triple Crown races, at Churchill Downs on May 3.
Making his 3-year-old debut, Pyro was listed as the 3-1 morning-line favorite in a field of 12 and will leave from the number 8 post under jockey Shaun Bridgmohan. Pyro is also runner-up to Eclipse Award winner War Pass in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Pyro’s recent workouts have been in company with 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin, also trained by Steve Asmussen.
Listed as the 7-2 second choice, Z Humor leaves from post number 11 with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard. Z Humor is unbeaten in three starts, including a victory in the Lecomte Stakes at the Fair Grounds on January 11.
