Race Horse Lava Man May Be Retired
Posted on Monday, July 21st, 2008
The owners of Lava Man are planning a decision soon on the future of 7-year-old gelding who hasn’t won in more than a year.
Lava Man, who has 17 wins in 46 starts, finished last among 6 horses in Sunday’s $400,000 Eddie Read Handicap on the turf at Del Mar.
“We’ll huddle up and decide to do what’s best for the horse,” said Steve Kenley of STD Stable, which owns Lava Man along with Jason Wood.
Lava Man has won $5.2 million since being claimed by his current owners for $50,000 at Del Mar in 2004. But he hasn’t visited the winner’s circle since capturing his third straight Hollywood Gold Cup on June 30, 2007 at Hollywood Park–six horse races ago.
“We have nothing but appreciation for this horse,” Kenley said. “It’s been quite a ride for four years. He’s been in the spotlight and he’s put us on the map.”
