Reigning Horse of the Year Curlin Will Be Retired To Stud In 2009

Posted on Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Reigning Horse of the Year Curlin will be retired to stud in 2009 announced majority race horse owner Jess Jackson Sunday.

SBG Global RacebookJackson is considering offers from farms in Kentucky before deciding where Curlin will stand at stud. Until then, Curlin will remain in training for a possible race later this year.

“If an appropriate venue and purse are offered, we would consider one more race in 2008 for Curlin,” Jess Jackson said.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Curlin won 11 of 16 starts and became the first American horse to exceed $10 million in purses with total earnings of $10,501,800.

Curlin’s wins include the Preakness Stakes, the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2007. This year, Curlin won the Stephen Foster Handicap, the Dubai World Cup, the Woodward Stakes and the Jockey Club Gold Cup a second straight time.

If Curlin doesn’t race again, his final effort would be a fourth-place finish behind Raven’s Pass in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park last October.

“He always gave it his all and has done everything we have asked of him,” Jess Jackson said. “I am looking forward to seeing his foals compete and possibly exceed his unequaled racing record.”
