Horse of the Year Saint LiamLEXINGTON, Kentucky (Ticker) - Saint Liam, the 2005 Eclipse Award winner as Horse of the Year, was euthanized Tuesday after injuring his hind leg, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported on its web site.

According to the report, the 6-year-old stallion was being led to his paddock at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky, when he slipped and fell, suffering a left tibial fracture.

The horse was taken to Lexington’s Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, where he was euthanized.

“That bone is a long bone and extremely hard … when it broke, it just exploded,” Dr. Larry Bramlage told the newspaper. “He had the bottom half of the bone in approximately 20 pieces. The fracture left no intact pieces above the joint that we could use to anchor screws or plates.”

Saint Liam all but secured the Eclipse Award on October 29, when he won the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Belmont Park. He also was named Champion Older Male.

A son of Saint Ballado, Saint Liam won nine of 20 career starts and earned $4,456,995.
