Santa Anita Park Cancels January 6 Horse Racing Program

Posted on Sunday, January 6th, 2008

Santa Anita Park canceled racing Sunday, January 6, for the second consecutive day because of heavy rainfall on a synthetic track that has had drainage problems since its installation. It was just the fourth time in 13 years the track has called off races because of rain.

About 5 1/2 inches of rain fell at the track over the previous two days and showers were predicted throughout Sunday afternoon.

The new surface, installed at a cost of $11 million, was designed to ensure safety for horses and jockeys. But drainage problems were discovered in September, when a half-inch of rain forced the cancellation of training for two mornings.

The track surface contains a fine silt that is bonding to water and not draining vertically as the track is designed to do, Santa Anita Park spokesman Mike Willman said.

The California Horse Racing Board called a special meeting for Tuesday to consider letting Santa Anita Park move some or all of its racing dates to Hollywood Park if the drainage problem was not resolved.

Live racing was scheduled to resume Monday, January 7, but a final decision will be based on track safety and the welfare of jockeys and horses, the track said. Santa Anita Park will be dark from January 8-9.
