2008 Breeders’ Cup Host Santa Anita Park To Overhaul Synthetic Track

Posted on Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Santa Anita Park will completely overhaul its troubled synthetic surface in July, four months before the track hosts the 2008 Breeders’ Cup scheduled on October 24-25.

The project calls for removing the existing asphalt base, adding a new grid base material, and treating the entire track with binder and fiber material. The process is expected to begin July 14 and last six weeks, during which there will be no training at the race track.

“We are very anxious to undertake and complete this project,” Santa Anita Park president Ron Charles said Monday. “We seriously considered other options, and we believe that staying with Pro-Ride and taking the time we did not have in February to fully upgrade the surface is the way to go.”

Pro-Ride is an Australian-based company. Ian Pearse, the company’s managing director, will oversee the project, as he did in February when the track was reformulated to allow for completion of the winter meeting.

Santa Anita lost 11 of the first 33 days of its winter meeting because the Cushion Track surface failed to drain properly following major rainstorms and hail in January.

Hollywood Park, located in Inglewood, has agreed to remain open for training during the Del Mar meeting, which runs July 16-Sept. 3.

Santa Anita’s new surface will debut with the Oak Tree meeting beginning Sept. 24.
