Posted on Friday, November 21st, 2008
Shadwell Stable homebred Shakis was euthanized on Friday, November 21, after taking a bad step and breaking his hind leg during a workout at Hollywood Park.
“He broke his sesamoid and fractured his pastern,” race horse trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, who was in New York at the time of the accident, said by phone. “He was in very bad shape and there was nothing that could be done.”
The 8-year-old son of Machiavellian was making his final work prior to racing in Hollywood Park’s Citation Handicap on November 29 which was expected to be his final start before beginning his stud career in 2009.
Irish-bred Shakis was shipped to Hollywood Park by race horse trainer Kiaran McLaughlin following an 11th-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Mile last October at Santa Anita Park
Shakis has a record of 7-5-5 in 35 starts and earned $860,532 in his horse racing career. He won the Bernard Baruch Handicap (G2) the last two summers at Saratoga.
