Spring House Wins San Luis Obispo Handicap at Santa Anita Park

Spring House, ridden by Garrett Gomez, rallied to beat Church Service by 2 1/2 lengths in the $150,000 San Luis Obispo Handicap at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, February 23.
Trained by Julio Canani, Spring House ran 1 1/2 miles on the turf in 2:27.21 and paid $5.40, $3.60 and $2.60 as the 8-5 wagering favorite. Church Service with jockey Martin Garcia riding returned $15.80 and $7.60. On the Acorn under jockey Victor Espinoza paid $3.20 to show.
The San Luis Obispo Handicap victory worth $90,000 increased Spring House’s career earnings to $544,284, with 6 wins in 30 starts.
Spring House had not run since finishing third in the Hollywood Turf Cup on December 8. Horse trainer Julio Canani said the 6-year-old gelding might run in either the $5 million Dubai Sheema Classic or the $6 million Dubai World Cup in late March.
Older horses racing in Santa Anita Park’s San Luis Obispo Handicap: Porfido, Sohgol, Isipingo, Rocket Legs and Sudan. Add Heat, Niagara Causeway and Obrigado were scratched.
