Stevie Wonderboy Begins 3-Yr.-Old Campaign
Posted on Wednesday, January 4th, 2006
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Stevie Wonderboy is set to open his 3-year-old campaign in the San Rafael Stakes on Jan. 14, the colt’s first step on the road to the Kentucky Derby.
Trainer Doug O’Neill said plans call for a Wednesday workout for his colt, and if all goes well then it’s on to the mile San Rafael at Santa Anita.
"As long as the weather holds up, he’ll work," O’Neill said Monday from Hollywood Park in Inglewood. "If not, I might push it off until Thursday, but the horse is doing fantastic."
Stevie Wonderboy, owned by TV impresario Merv Griffin, won four of five races last year, capped by his 1 1/4 -length win over Henny Hughes in the BC Juvenile at Belmont Park on Oct. 29.
The colt, named for singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder, became the early favorite for the May 6 Derby with his win in the Juvenile and all but wrapped up the Eclipse Award as 2-year-old male champion.
Griffin, a 15-time Emmy Award winner, won’t be at Santa Anita for the race. "He’s on a yacht in the Virgin Islands," O’Neill said.
