Street Sense Wins Kentucky Derby 133

Street Sense wins the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs. The Carl Nafzger trainee will now prepare for Preakness Stakes on May 19, the second jewel of the Triple Crown race.

Making this year???s Kentucky Derby more memorable was its special guest, England???s Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Phillip, who made a visit to the Downs part of her six-day official visit to the US.

Hard Spun finished second while heavy favorite Curlin succumbed to 3rd place at the Run for the Roses. Both horses also confirmed running at the Preakness.
Nafzger was initially resistant to let Street Sense run at Pimlico, but he briefly let his mind wander to a possible sweep of the Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

???As soon as we win the Preakness, we???ll go to the Belmont,??? he said, smiling.

Nafzger has saddled two Preakness starters, including second-place Unbridled in 1990 who gave him his first Run for the Roses victory.

Many of the 20 Kentucky Derby horses will skip the Preakness, including trainer Todd Pletcher???s record-tying five starters: Any Given Saturday, Circular Quay, Cowtown Cat, Sam. P and Scat Daddy. But Pletcher will have a presence in Baltimore with King of the Roxy, second in the Santa Anita Derby. Other possible Preakness Stakes Starters >>
