Stuyvesant Handicap, Aqueduct a Victory for Evening Attire

Posted on Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

The recent Stuyvesant Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct Race Course ended a nine-race and over a year’s worth of losing streak for Evening Attire. The Kentucky-bred seven-year-old’s previous victory happened way back in 2004 at the Saratoga Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2), his second win in that thoroughbred race.

With trainer Pat Kelly and jockey Jose Santos, Evening Attire came off fourth in the six-horse field, following the slow pace set by 2-1 favorite Aggadan, runner-up at the Maryland Million Classic Stakes last October. West Virginia, the 2005 Philip H. Iselin Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3) champion at Monmouth Park, seized the lead on the turn, holding Aggadan back as he came on again in midstretch. Evening Attire went wide for his drive and closed determinedly, edging West Virginia by a neck in final strides in the 1 1/8-mile test.

Champion Evening Attire clocked in at 1:51.38 on a fast track in the $108,600 Stuyvesant Handicap while West Virginia came second at 3/4 length in front of third placer Aggadan. Dr. Rockett, stablemate and half brother to Evening Attire, finished last.

Son of Black Tie Affair (Ire) out of Our Native mare Concolour, Evening Attire started six times this season, his prior best effort a third place finish in a 1 1/4-mile allowance/optional claiming race last August at Saratoga Race Course. Campaigned by Kelly’s father, Racing Hall of Fame trainer Thomas Kelly, along with Joseph and Mary Grant, he has won 12 of 45 career starts, including the 2002 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1). Evening Attire holds a lifetime bankroll of $2,483,352.
