The Belmont Stakes Field 2009 at Belmont Park June 6
Posted on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009
Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird is the 2-1 morning line favorite in the 141st running of the $1-million Belmont Stakes 2009 at 1 1/2 miles on June 6 at Belmont Park.
The Belmont Stakes field of 10 race horses with jockeys and Belmont Stakes odds:
- Chocolate Candy under jockey Garrett Gomez with morning line odds of 10-1
- Dunkirk under jockey John Velazquez, 4-1
- Mr. Hot Stuff under jockey Edgar Prado, 15-1
- Summer Bird under jockey Kent Desormeaux, 12-1
- Luv Gov under jockey Miguel Mena, 20-1
- Charitable Man under jockey Alan Garcia, 3-1
- Mine That Bird under jockey Calvin Borel, 2-1
- Flying Private under jockey Julien Leparoux, 12-1
- Miner’s Escape under jockey Jose Lezcano, 15-1
- Brave Victory under jockey Rajiv Maragh, 15-1
“He’ll win,” said jockey Calvin Borel of Mine That Bird, who will break from post 7 aboard the 2-1 morning line favorite. “That’s what we’re here for. I see a Derby race, same style. He sits back there. Belmont has a long stretch and I can sit and wait. I watch this horse every day, he goes two miles, two-and-a-half miles.”
A victory in the Belmont Stakes would make Mine That Bird the first Kentucky Derby winner to win the Belmont Stakes since Thunder Gulch in 1995 and make jockey Calvin Borel the first jockey to win the Triple Crown on different mounts.
One of the chief Belmont Stakes contenders for Mine That Bird is Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warren’s Charitable Man, the “now” horse of this year’s Belmont Stakes.
The son of 1999 Belmont Stakes winner Lemon Drop Kid trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Charitable Man has won 3 of 4 career starts, including Belmont Park’s Peter Pan Stakes on May 9. Charitable Man’s only loss came on Keeneland‘s PolyTrack in the April 11 Blue Grass Stakes. That was his first start back in seven months, during which time he underwent surgery to correct a saucer fracture of the left shin.
“We have a horse whose style fits this race, who has the pedigree, who is 2-for-2 on this track and who couldn’t be training any better,” said race horse trainer Kiaran McLaughlin of Charitable Man who will break from post 6 under jockey Alan Garcia, who was aboard last year’s Belmont winner Da’Tara. “I have a lot of respect for Mine That Bird, Chocolate Candy and Dunkirk, but I have a quality horse that couldn’t be doing any better.”
Dunkirk, 11th in the Kentucky Derby, has trained steadily including a spectacular half-mile bullet of :47 1/5 on May 18 that was the fastest of 62 works at the distance.
“If you look at his work tab, there are bullets all over it,” race horse trainer Todd Pletcher said of Dunkirk, who will be ridden by jockey John Velazquez in the Belmont Stakes. “That’s not my training style. But I think it shows how much talent he has. He is out of a Kentucky Oaks-winning dam (Secret Status), and we have a lot of confidence in him.”
Craig Family Trust’s Chocolate Candy, who has drawn the rail under jockey Garrett Gomez, was the runner-up in the Santa Anita Derby to Pioneerof the Nile. Chocolate Candy made his first start on dirt in the sloppy Kentucky Derby where he finished fifth.
The Belmont Stakes is race 11 of Belmont Park’s June 6 card. Belmont Stakes 141 post time is 6:47 pm Eastern.
