Rockport Harbor Retires

Posted on Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas (Ticker) - Rockport Harbor, one of the most popular horses to race at Oaklawn Park in recent years, has retired. The announcement was made by trainer John Servis at Oaklawn on Monday morning.

The handsome gray colt, nicknamed "Rocky," grabbed national attention with a pair of wins as a two-year-old at Aqueduct - the Nashua and Remsen Stakes. In the latter, he suffered an injury that was slow to heal.

Following an abbreviated three-year-old campaign, including a second-place finish in the Rebel Stakes, Rockport Harbor took an extended vacation to allow further healing of the injury.

Rockport Harbor returned to Oaklawn this spring and captured the Essex Handicap by 2 1/4 lengths in his typical front-running style. However, his subsequent start in the Razorback Breeders’ Cup Handicap on March 12 resulted in an unexpected fifth-place finish and the news that the injury had resurfaced.

"We decided we were fighting a losing battle," Servis said. "It’s the right thing to do for the horse. It would not be fair to put him in a competitive position again."

Rick Porter purchased Rockport Harbor for $470,000 at the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale.
