UPS Pledges Donation To Charity That Aids Thoroughbreds

ATLANTA (AP)–Shipping giant UPS, which has ridden a wave of enthusiasm amid Big Brown’s success as the horse seeks to become the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years, has pledged $10,000 to a charity that aids thoroughbreds.

The Atlanta-based company said in a statement that in making the donation to Thoroughbred Charities of America, it wants to honor filly Eight Belles, who was euthanized after an injury at the Kentucky Derby.

Big Brown, named by one of its owners in honor of UPS, needs only to win at the Belmont Stakes next month to take the Triple Crown, after wins at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Brown is the dominant color on UPS delivery trucks and the word is used extensively in its advertising.

The donation to TCA, announced Friday, is being made through UPS’ charitable arm, The UPS Foundation. UPS, also known as United Parcel Service, is the world’s largest shipping carrier.

TCA is a fundraising organization that gives annual grants to equine-related non-profits that focus on thoroughbred rescue, rehabilitation and retraining for horses for careers after racing and research in equine scientific fields.
