Vestrey Lady Brings Top Price at Keeneland Sale Tuesday

Posted on Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Stakes winning Vestrey Lady, in foal to Broken Vow, commanded a top price of $300,000 during Tuesday’s session of Keeneland‘s January Horses of All Ages Sale.

SBG Global RacebookNobuo Tsunoda bought the 6-year-old mare Vestrey Lady who is by Vicar out of the Kris S. mare Episode and is from the family of 2007 Kentucky Derby champion Street Sense and graded stakes winner and sire Mr. Greeley. She was consigned by Cara Bloodstock (Bernard McCormack), agent.

On Tuesday, Keeneland sold 210 horses for gross sales of $9,145,700, down 66.2% from the corresponding session in 2008 when 239 horses brought $27,088,200.  Average price was $43,551, down 61.6% from last year’s $113,340.  Median price decreased 55.8% from $60,000 to $26,500.

“You can’t really compare breeding stock sales; last year we sold three $1 million horses on this day. However, when you consider this as a sale within a sale, it was very good. The auctioneers, as well as consignors and buyers, said this session had a stronger feel to it when compared with yesterday. There was spirited bidding for the quality horses,” said Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland’s director of sales.

Cumulative gross sales for the first two days were $21,091,600, down 56.4% from last year’s $48,414,100. Average price was down 54.1% from $111,553 to $51,193.  Median price of $27,000 decreased 53.8% from last year’s $58,500.

Keeneland’s January Horses of All Ages Sale continues through Saturday with sessions beginning daily at 10 a.m.  and streamed live at www.keeneland.com.
